| What to Expect From Treatment |
To better manage your Hyperhidrosis, you should be thinking about these five goals: |
- Reducing the amount you sweat so that it is not noticeable and doesn’t interfere with your daily activities
- Few, if any, side effects
- A cost that which you can afford to maintain
- Compatibility with any underlying health conditions or medications you are currently taking
- Convenience
|
Whichever treatment you ultimately choose, please ensure that you discuss any other underlying health conditions or medications you are currently taking with your sweat specialist. This is important in determining if your treatment will be effective. |
- Focal injections: interrupting the signal from the nerve to the sweat glands
- Topical antiperspirant treatments: applying aluminum chloride hexahydrate
- Oral medications: treating the underlying conditions
- Iontophoresis: applying low-intensity electric current to affected areas
- Surgery: severing the nerves that cause excess sweating

| What to Expect from Topical Treatments |
 |
| Treatment Experience |
 |
| Easy to apply, topical treatments are the simplest way to control mild sweating. Antiperspirants need to be applied regularly to be effective. Extra-strength preparations have to be applied at least two or three times a week, and sometimes more often. |
 |
| Response to Treatment |
 |
It takes about a week of frequent application to achieve full effect, after which the antiperspirant can be applied as needed to maintain relief from excessive sweating.
While topical treatments control symptoms in the short term, they don't offer a long-term solution. However, the duration of the effect after each application may increase over time, so reapplications are required less often. |
 |
| Side Effects |
 |
| Antiperspirants can irritate and sensitize the skin, causing red, itchy and swollen skin in some. If you should experience this, take a break for a few days and try again. If the irritation persists, you may need to consider a different treatment. |
